Stony grey guest book
This is a crossed structure binding I created as a guest book for Folan’s Cottage, a holiday home in Connemara, an area in the west of Ireland famous for its patchwork of stony walls, rocky fields, sheep and stunning scenery. The guest book is inspired by the stone cottage and the surrounding rugged landscape.
I started by collecting flotsam from the beach beside the cottage – a collection of worn sticks, fishermen’s netting and rusty metalwork. I became fascinated with the many shades and varieties of yellow lichen which grow on the stone walls outside and even inside the house.
I chose a beautiful, subtle grey leather for the book’s cover. This particular hide had many blemishes which reminded me of Connemara’s mottled stone walls. I lined the inside of the leather with a handmade vivid yellow paper. The paper is slightly see-through in areas, allowing a glimpse of the grey leather underneath.
The book is fastened using one of the gnarled sticks I found on the beach. This handmade guest book measures 17 x 27 x 3 cms.
